Infrastructure Maintenance — Cake Commercial Services

Infrastructure Maintenance

CAKE keeps New Zealand's infrastructure assets in service, delivering corrosion protection, coatings and remediation across water, transport, energy, marine and industrial networks. Most of it is done while the asset stays operational.

Our infrastructure maintenance services

Our wider maintenance capability is delivered through our coatings and remediation teams, applied to the specific demands of each asset type. Details of the sectors we work in are below.

By sector

The sectors we work in

01 Water and wastewater

Tanks, reservoirs, sedimentation and treatment structures, manholes, pipework, tunnels and confined spaces. Wastewater is among the most aggressive environments we work in, with hydrogen sulphide attacking both concrete and steel, and it needs coating systems specified for it. We have delivered water and wastewater work every year for two decades.

02 Transport infrastructure

Steel bridges, gantries, structures over live carriageways and roading network assets. This work carries traffic management, access and public safety requirements alongside the coating itself.

03 Energy and power generation

Transmission and communication towers, hydro and generation assets, gas infrastructure and supporting plant. Much of it is critical infrastructure where outages are costly, so the ability to work on energised and operating assets matters.

04 Marine and coastal

Vessels, wharf structures, tanks and coastal assets exposed to the most corrosive conditions in the country. Splash zone and immersed service demands specific systems and preparation standards.

05 Oil, gas and industrial

Tank internals and externals, pipework, concrete bunding and process plant. Compliance-heavy environments with confined space and hazardous area requirements.

06 Building and structural

Car parks, canopies, roofing, high-rise exteriors and structural elements on commercial buildings. Car park decks in particular tend to be neglected until deterioration is advanced.

Built for assets that cannot stop

Maintenance is different from construction work. The asset is in service, the client has an operational obligation, and the work has to fit around that rather than the other way round.

We plan for it. Containment, dehumidification, fume extraction and VOC management let us work in occupied and sensitive environments, and we have solved access and emissions problems on sites where the alternative was a shutdown. On one major project our approach to VOC management became the basis for the client's own specification.

For asset owners running a maintenance programme rather than a one-off job, we also carry out condition assessment, corrosion inspection and coating specification design. That allows maintenance to be planned and budgeted across a portfolio instead of responding to failures as they appear.

Our systems are ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and ISO 45001 certified, with a full-time quality manager, a full-time training manager and a full-time compliance manager across the business.

Where we work

We deliver infrastructure maintenance nationwide from bases in Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch, and we work well beyond the main centres. Our South Island team covers Christchurch and the wider region, including Queenstown, Wanaka, Central Otago and Southland, where local specialist capability is limited and most contractors are travelling in regardless.

We take on work at any scale. A single tank, a manhole or a car park deck is as welcome as a multi-year programme, and the smaller recurring work is a significant part of what we do.

Frequently asked questions

In most cases yes, and it is how we normally work. Containment, extraction and staged access allow coating and remediation work to be completed around operations. It requires planning, so involving us early gives the best outcome.

Both. We work directly with utilities, network owners and facility operators, and we deliver as a subcontractor to main contractors and Alliance partners on capital projects.

Yes. Condition assessment, corrosion inspection and coating specification design are services we offer independently of application. Some clients engage us for that alone.

Hydrogen sulphide generated in wastewater converts to sulphuric acid on surfaces, which attacks concrete and steel aggressively. Standard coating systems fail quickly, so these assets need systems specified for the exposure, applied to a high standard of surface preparation, and often installed in confined spaces.
